Character Scenarios

As seen on TV! Er, podcast. Uh, watch-Starcrossed-Losers-on-Spotify.exe: https://open.spotify.com/show/5gsNB8IZlySHLUT4YiOy8m?si=d1c497ca3cbe4e49.

Haha, hi! So, yeah! To explain, I’m in a podcast with my writer friend, Starcrossing. You’ll find at the end of Episode 3 and 4 (yet to be released) we do a little game called Character Scenerios Scenarios (why can’t I spell this right?)!

What Is?

Character Scenarios is a really great way to practice character development and have fun with your characters. At their core, these are a series of prompts that put characters in a variety of situations, leaving you to figure out how they would react or deal with that situation or why they got into it in the first place.

For example, say the prompt leads you to read something like “Pikachu has arrived to pick up Evan Hansen and take them to prom. What is Pikachu’s mode of transportation?” And now you get to figure out the most logical explanation for why and how these two are going to prom together and also what Pikachu’s mode of transportation is.

I like to do these with other people where we both contribute to the characters being used and we both laugh together as we figure out what the heck is happening.

How it works?

In the next post, you’ll see a theme and a series of prompts. It’s best to go in the order of the prompts as given, since many of these themes follow a pattern and reference previous prompts in the theme.

  1. Characters
    • Each theme or post will require a certain number of characters. Choose that many characters from anywhere (Your own OCs, pop culture icons, your stinky little brother, a bowl of fruit, whatever, have fun) and assign them a number based on how many characters are involved.
      • I find it best to put them in a list format, since you will be referencing these numbers in each prompt.

Example:

1. Batman
2. An Umbrella
3. Princess Leia
4. The Joker
5. Darth Vader

2. Prompt

  • Each prompt will look something like “Around the corner, 1 sees 5 making out with 2. How embarassing!”
    • With the characters chosen above, this would mean “Batman sees Darth Vader making out with an umbrella.” You fill in the numbers with the character names (Like mad libs, for all those who know it!) and then have fun with your imagination!
  • What happens next? Why is Character 5 kissing Character 2? Are they both good kissers/how spicy is the kiss? Is Character 1 jealous?
  • Go as far or little as you desire and then move to the next prompt in the theme! You can write it down or simply talk it out. Act it out?

And that’s pretty much it! It really is a lot of fun and a great cure for writer’s block, character development, or just relaxing and getting creative juices flowing. Probably useful for acting practice too, getting more into character and understanding your character better.

Give it a try! Here is the first list I made: Prom Night. Just remember to have fun. ;D

I will be uploading new scenarios as I make them and we will be, ah, performing? more of them on the podcast as we make more episodes! Looking for more things like this in the meantime? Check out this Hunger Games simulator for some wacky character scenario fun. Just try not to get your school lunch ladies killed. XD

Anyway—*I wrap my arms around you and give you a silent sturdy hug.* You’re going to be okay. This too shall pass. Time cannot stop; it can only move forward. Hope has a funny way of returning, even when it seems gone forever. You are not alone. *I hold the hug for a few moments longer and then let go to see how strong and wonderful you are. I smile.*
